Glorious Accra Hearts of Oak came from behind to beat Bechem United on Sunday, 26th June to successfully defend the title they won last year.

Heart of Oak were making their 19th appearance in the FA cup finals against Bechem United’s second. After what many believe was a poor season in the local league for the Phobians after finishing 6th, this was a perfect moment for the rainbow boys to make amends and bring joy to their supporters to save their season.

The Hunters took the lead on the stroke of half time, after Richard Ayi failed to put Augustine Okrah’s shot to safety, allowing Emmanuel Avornyo to tap in from close range.

Heart of Oak responded rapidly and equalised 3 minutes into the additional time through Caleb Amankwa after a delicious cross from Samuel Inkoom. The first half ended in a 1:1 draw.
The Phobians continued from where they left in the first half after the recess, mounting pressure upon pressure on the Hunters.

Their efforts eventually paid off on the 60th minute when Afriyie Barnieh latched onto Gladson Awako’s ball to give the rainbow boys the winning goal.
7 minutes later, Augustine Okrah turned Zinidine Yazid Zidane.

He headbutted the assistant referee I and was shown the exit. With 23 more minutes tointolay for and Bechem United already trailing, there wasn’t any way there were going to come back in the game.

The game ended 2:1 in favour of the Phobians. This triumph means, the Phobians have defended and extended their record FA Cup titles to 12 and would also represent Ghana in next season’s CAF Confederation cup.

It also set Heart of Oak against their sworn Rivals, Kumasi Asante Kotoko in the super cup next two months. Afriyie Bernieh has now played 4 finals in his career, winning all
