Goals are what most women who watch football and other gentlemen who love other sports than football are usually interested in, and it is no surprise that players that score most goals in a tournament or a season are given special recognition and mention.

With Kumasi Asante Kotoko already crowned the champions of the season ahead of the last round of matches, two areas that were of interest to our soccer fans were the battle for relegation survival and the goal king contest.

With Kotoko’s Cameronian import, Franck Thierry Etouga Mbella taking the league by storm in his debut season, scoring 21 goals in as many league games, and his side already played their final game yesterday and drawing blank against Accra Lions, all eyes were on Sefwi land, as Bibiani Gold Stars welcome in-form Yaw Annor’s Ashantigold.

With 22 mins inside the game, the 24 year old speedster, Yaw Annor broke the virginity of the game to draw level with Kotoko’s talisman on the scorers’ chart, both at 21 on the summit. With almost 70 minutes to play for, it was only a matter of patience from the miners’ supporters to see their talisman outrightly take the conveted individual accolade.

On the stroke of first half, that moment arrived, Yaw Annor scored his second goal of the afternoon to double the miners lead, and to equal Heart of Oak’ lethal striker, Ishmael Addo’s 22 league goals in a single season he set in 2001 as he overtakes Mbella in this season’s goal king chart.

The supporters of the miners started chanting Yaw Annor’s name with the hope that he can smash Ishmael Addo’s record as well and make it his, but they waited in vain as that moment never came. Bibiani Gold Stars grew stronger in confidence in the second half to draw parity with the miners.

The game ended in a 2 all draw. Yaw Annor becomes Ashantigold’s first player to win the goal king prize after Hans Kwoffie in 2019/2020. With his blistering form for Ashantigold this season, a lot of clubs in Ghana and outside Ghana are keen on grabbing his signature ahead of next seeson. It’s just a matter of time to see wether Ashgold can keep their prized asset or not.
